Support for Student Protesters
Al Enteshar Al Arabi – Los Angeles Shura Chairman, Dr. Ahmed Soboh, Along with representatives from several Islamic organizations spoke at UCLA at a press conference on Wednesday, May 1, 2024. The press conference was organized by CAIR-LA. Representatives from CAIR-LA, MPAC, MSA-UCLA, ICNA SoCal, and others spoke supporting the students and expressing their strong condemnation for the attacks that took place against the students the night before. The peaceful UCLA Palestine Solidarity Encampment was attacked by pro-Israel extremists. The assailants used chemical weapons, shot fireworks, and used psychological warfare against the students in the encampment before attempting to tear down the encampment. Even though law enforcement was in the vicinity, it was several hours before they intervened to stop the attacks. This lead to more that 25 students requiring medical assistance. Several imams and community leaders visited the encampment and conveyed the community support to the students. The university administration issued a dispersal order and requested the LAPD to enter the area and dismantle the encampment. Shura Council is extremely disappointed in the UCLA administration for not protecting the students from the attacking mobs. We ask the community to continue to support students who are protesting against the genocide in Palestine and organizing for their schools to divest from military investments and apartheid regimes. The Shura Chairman and Board have been visiting the various Palestine Solidarity Encampments at UCI, UCR, USC and others to support the Muslim students This resource is supported in whole or in part by funding provided by the State of California, administered by the California State Library in partnership with the California Department of Social Services and the California Commission on Asian and Pacific Islander American Affairs as part of the Stop the Hate program.
