On Monday, June 8, the owners of a coffee cart serving Filipino and Mexican fusion drinks were approached by a neighbor after they had set up their cart on the street outside their home. They had received the proper permits and were only open for a few days before the confrontation.
In a video recording, the man is heard yelling racist remarks at the coffee vendor and claiming that they were breaking the law. He also reportedly threatened to take legal action against them.
The cart owners said the neighbor later came back to apologize but continued to make racist comments.
In a statement, CAIR-LA Executive Director Hussam Ayloush said:
We strongly condemn this appalling display of hate. Racism has no place in our communities and the discriminatory remarks reportedly directed at the owners of the coffee cart are completely unacceptable. This incident highlights the urgent need to combat hate and address intolerance and prejudice in our communities.”
