Sabr at Fajr: Mural Unveiled at Islamic Center of Southern California

Los Angeles | www.mpac.org | July 22, 2025 — On Monday afternoon, the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) proudly joined LA vs Hate, faith leaders, elected officials, artists, and community members to unveil “Sabr at Fajr”, a new mural at the Islamic Center of Southern California. Created by Palestinian-American artist Saj Issa, the mural, whose title translates to “Patience at Dawn”, symbolizes resilience and hope, depicting a Sabr (cactus) plant taking root in a landscape that bridges Los Angeles and the Middle East. This artwork is part of LA vs Hate’s Signs of Solidarity campaign, a grassroots effort to counter hate and promote unity through public art.
The mural holds profound meaning for the American Muslim community in Los Angeles. Earlier this year, the Islamic Center of Southern California was defaced with hate-motivated graffiti, an attack meant to intimidate but instead strengthened our collective resolve. This installation transforms pain into purpose, reclaiming public space with a bold statement of identity, dignity, and belonging. “This mural affirms the vital role the Muslim community plays in the fabric of Los Angeles—woven into its communities, culture, and civic life,” said MPAC President Salam Al-Marayati. “In the face of hate and division, we respond with dignity, expression, and a shared commitment to justice and to benefit humanity.”
MPAC is honored to have partnered in making this project possible, recognizing the power of art as a tool for healing, visibility, and solidarity. At a time when Islamophobia and hate crimes are on the rise, Sabr at Fajr sends a clear message: hate has no home here. Through initiatives like these, we not only celebrate representation but also create opportunities for dialogue, connection, and resilience within and beyond the Muslim community.
The unveiling is part of a larger countywide effort to foster inclusion and counter discrimination. MPAC remains committed to working with local partners to ensure that Los Angeles continues to be a place where diversity is embraced and every community is protected.
