On In the heart of Washington, D.C., the 2024 National American Muslim Policy Conference (NAMPC) convened, marking a significant moment in the dialogue surrounding the rights and representation of American Muslims. Co-hosted by the Muslim Public Affairs Council (MPAC) along with prominent organizations like Emgage Action, the Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU), American Muslim Health Professionals (AMHP), and the Muslim Civic Coalition, the event was more than a gathering—it was a profound call to action.

This year’s conference was particularly energized by the Community Collaborative Initiative, a project spearheaded by Indiana University’s Lilly School of Philanthropy. It brought together policymakers, community leaders, and experts to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing American Muslims today. High on the agenda were the rising tide of Islamophobia, urgent foreign policy concerns, human rights, mental health, and the overarching need for political leadership that mirrors the community’s diversity and needs.

Amidst the backdrop of ongoing crises like the genocide in Gaza, the discussions took on an added weight, emphasizing the necessity for policies that uphold human dignity and justice. The conference highlighted the critical state of human rights in regions like Gaza, where violence and deprivation underscore the urgency of advocacy for self-determination and fairness on the global stage.

Panel discussions were rich and varied, covering topics from the impact of the Muslim vote in the upcoming 2024 elections to U.S. foreign policy and its implications for human rights. A notable session included Congressman Ro Khanna and former State Department official Josh Paul, alongside leaders from ISPU and Emgage. They explored alternative U.S. foreign policy approaches that could reinforce the country’s commitment to democratic values and human rights internationally.

Salam Al-Marayati, President and Co-Founder of MPAC, underscored the conference’s mission: “President Biden, Members of Congress, and state-level officials must hear our voices. They need to know what it takes to secure our votes and support.” This statement resonated throughout the conference, calling on American Muslims to harness their collective power to influence the 2024 elections and beyond.

The event also stressed the importance of civic engagement and political participation as essential tools for advocating community interests and influencing policy. As the conference wrapped up, there was a palpable sense of determination among attendees to remain actively involved in their communities and the political process.

The 2024 National American Muslim Policy Conference not only provided a platform for expressing concerns and proposing solutions but also reinforced the vital role of unity and informed participation in shaping a more inclusive and just future. With the 2024 elections on the horizon, the American Muslim community is poised to use its voice, vote, and visibility to advocate for meaningful change.
